The artist and his work

The suffering artist.
Funny how there never seems to be a joyful one.
Or a satisfied one for that matter.
No they are always miserable and/or yearning with the greatest intensity for something they don't have.
And their work always seem to convey that kind of a feeling.
Either in a dreamy and hazy non-reachable way
or with a powerful exploding silent scream of an image.
.
But then again beauty lies in the eye of the beholder i suppose.
And an artist is only called an artist if his audience says so.
So why is it that the audience in general only seems to be able to connect to a piece of art if it radiates fear, anger, loneliness, disappointment or slaps them around and shakes them up by some other emotion.
Why does art always have to be deep, dark and preferably scary.
How come it's not art if it conveys contentment
or a calm sense of happiness without a sad twist.
It's just interesting
how we seem to have to be shocked, shaken and electricuted emotionally to like something.
